Analyzing Post-dialogue Comments by Speakers - How Do Humans Personalize Their Utterances in Dialogue? -

چکیده
We have been studying methods to personalize system utterances for users in casual conversations. We know that personalization is important, but no wellestablished way to personalize system utterances for users has been proposed. In this paper, we report the results of our experiment that examined how humans personalize utterances when speaking to each other in casual conversations. In particular, we elicited post-dialogue comments from speakers and analyzed the comments to determine what they thought about the dialogues while they engaged in them. In addition, by analyzing the effectiveness of their thoughts, we found that dialogue strategies for personalization related to “topic elaboration”, “topic changing” and “tempo” significantly increased the satisfaction with regard to the dialogues.

Evaluation of Listening-Oriented Dialogue Control Rules Based on the Analysis of HMMs
We have been working on listening-oriented dialogues for the purpose of building listening agents. In our previous work [1], we trained hidden Markov models (HMMs) from listeningoriented dialogues (LoDs) between humans, and by analyzing them, discovered a distinguishing dialogue flow of LoD. For example, listeners suppress their information giving and selfdisclosure, and instead, increase ackno...
متن کاملA Quantitative View of Short Utterances in Daily Conversation: A Case Study of Thats right, Thats true and Thats correct
Short utterances serve a multitude of different communicative functions in interactive speech and have attracted due attention in recent research in dialogue acts. This paper presents a quantitative description of three short utterances i.e. that’s right, that’s true, that’s correct and their variations based on the Switchboard Dialogue Act Corpus. Particularly, it offers an overview to account...
متن کاملMulti-agent Human-Machine Dialogue: Issues in Dialogue Management and Referring Expression Semantics
This paper describes a human-machine dialogue system which is configured to support dialogue between multiple speakers. The user is one speaker, and the system ‘plays’ a number of other speakers. We present a number of principles governing dialogue management in such cases, which relate to turn-taking and the identification of the addressees of utterances. We also describe how the syntactic and...
متن کاملError Handling in Spoken Dialogue Systems : Managing Uncertainty, Grounding and Miscommunication
Due to the large variability in the speech signal, the speech recognition process constitutes the major source of errors in most spoken dialogue systems. A spoken dialogue system can never know for certain what the user is saying, it can only make hypotheses. As a result of this uncertainty, two types of errors can be made: over-generation of hypotheses, which leads to misunderstanding, and und...
متن کاملA new method for understanding sequences of utterances by multiple speakers
This paper presents a new method for understanding utterances in spoken dialogue. The method is characterized by an understanding rule that accepts an utterance sequence in which each utterance has its own speaker identifier. This new idea enables the speech understanding system to understand a dialogue composed of sequences of short phrases each possibly uttered by different speakers. The meth...
